This is a presentation given as an invited paper for the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Seminar at Oslo University Hospital, 10th September 2021.

It addresses the content of pain assessment, the impact of pain, nature of pain experienced by people with DMD, expression and language of pain and types of pain assessment tools that could be considered for use with people with DMD.

Importantly, it notes that:

• There is no ‘perfect’ pain assessment tool.

• Pain assessment involves:

• Connection and relationship

• Listening (being open to figurative language and metaphor)

• Dialogue using skilled ‘pain talk’ (triadic collaboration & focused reassurance) (Carter et al., 2021; Jordan et al, 2021).

• Awareness and insight about pain literacy

• A person-centred approach that promotes person’s agency
