The PAWES framework is designed to aid teaching staff  to focus in on the purpose of every teaching session (or sequence of learning and teaching events) and fully consider and reflect on expectations of the students in terms of workload and engagement, and also obligations in ensuring that the experience was as accessible as possible. It also challenges the idea of ‘success’ as purely end of module grades and focused instead on what successful engagement with the content might look like, such as submitting coursework or undertaking formative tasks.
