Teaching in CBHE: common approaches and influencing factors
Despite the extensive research on pedagogy within university settings, the teaching practices of college-based higher education (CBHE) remain underexplored. This gap overlooks the unique methods, strategies, and tools employed in CBHE environments. This short talk will unveil novel findings from a PhD study focused on CBHE teaching practices in England. The talk will predominantly utilise data from a three-round online Delphi study with an expert panel of 16 CBHE teachers across eight academic disciplines. These educators initially identified 76 teaching methods, strategies, and tools, ultimately reaching consensus on 54 as predominantly used, alongside 43 influential factors affecting the selection of approaches out of an initial 57 that were generated by the panel. This investigation not only fills a research void but also sets the groundwork for a forthcoming extensive study aimed at quantifying the adoption of these teaching approaches within the CBHE sector. Through revealing commonly used practices and influencing factors, this study paves the way for enhancing the understanding of teaching practice in CBHE settings.
