This presentation was given at SRHE in 2017. It outlines the findings of a research project exploring the perceptions towards maintaining currency in disciplinary expertise for teaching and scholarship life science academics. The presentation outlines a number of strategies to keep disciplinary expertise current, and also explores the importance of the (nominal) head of department in creating a culture which supports or impedes teaching and scholarship academics.
