Abstract:

The Synthesised Model of Reflection (SMoR) is a new approach to assessing reflective writing, as well as supporting reflective practice. NTU Psychology funded a sabbatical (50% buyout of workload) to develop and evaluate this model as there is a recognition for the need to build reflective practice into curricula. A spiral approach (Harden 1999) is planned as this been demonstrated to be effective with developing the reflective practice of teachers (Denton 2011). To evaluate the impact of these new teaching, learning and assessment resources, a multiple method approach was adopted to produce three work packageswork-packages (WP1/2/3). WP1 Work-package1 integrates the SMoR as a formative and summative assessment on the British Psychological Society BPS accredited MSc Occupational Psychology course. This will be evaluated qualitatively, examining the effectiveness of how the model has been utilised as well as to assess the improvement in quality between the Term 1 Formative and Term 2 Summative assessments. WP2 Work-package2 evaluates the new Level 4 teaching and learning content and assessment using self-reported surveys, to assess student skill development and their confidence in reflective practice, at the start and end of their learning. WP3 Work-package3 evaluates training workshops delivered to staff. Preliminary findings from the ongoing evaluations will be presented where available.
