How to Identify Topics and Develop Critical Reflection
This teaching resource has been designed as an aid to develop critical reflection with students. It forms part of a 'How to Teach' Series. From evidence gathered in practice, students identified confusion around the term 'critical' and in understanding the concept of 'critical reflection'. Research on the 'hidden curriculum' outlines that students with assessment knowledge can fair better ( Koutsouris, Mountford-Zimdars and Dingwall, 2021). Furthermore, the social construction of assessment highlights that teaching assessment literacy to make criteria explicit is key ( Hanesworth, Bracken and Elkington (2019). This resource is based on a creative pedagogy to engage students (Lin, 2011), using colour coding and examples to build reflective skills.
