Imaginarium

Imaginarium (2015) is a practice-led choreographic research project exploring the work and life of the Surrealist artist and writer, Leonora Carrington (1917–2011). Co- created and performed by James Hewison and Michelle Man, it was choreographed as a series of fleeting metamorphoses, drawing on the vibrancy and captured energies found in Carrington’s sketches and paintings, as well as in her often bizarre and contorted literary figures. Developed through felt responses to the materiality and textures in her work, Imaginarium also grew through a re-imagining of the artist’s physicality in relation to her canvas. The soundscore was created by Alfonso García de la Torre Rey. Premiered at the Costa Contemporanea Festival in Almeria in September 2014, Imaginarium had six performances between March and May 2015 at Tate, Liverpool, as part of the Leonora Carrington exhibition.
