I became programme director of MSc Entrepreneurship at UCL School of Management in 2016, and from 2017 we became the highest scoring programme in terms of 'Overall Student Satisfaction' in the PTES (Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey). Scores ranged from 90% to 95% consistently, including during the entire pandemic period.

I felt it would be interesting to try and put the success we have achieved into a framework. This has been widely shared within UCL School of Management and has contributed to improvements in the performance of our programmes.

Some points to note:

  • In 2019, we found statistical corrrelation across all four MSc programmes with high 'Overal Student Satisfaction' scores and high scores relating to teaching and administration. If these two were high, other lower scoring factors, such as for assessment and feeback, were 'forgiven' when it came to the overall score.
  • Instinctively, however, I felt that the high overall PTES score was not fully related to the other measures being taken in the survey, and that other critical features of a programme (such as the student recruitment policy and the culture & environment created) were simply not being captured. Based on this, I defined a framework with the other components that I felt really mattered.
  • Although all the criteria in the framework have not been specifically corrrelated with the PTES survey (this is in fact not possible due to the questions chosen), nor other similar surveys used, the principles of the framework have been applied consistently over an eight-year period. In every year MSc Entrepreneurship has out-performed every other postgraduate or undergradute programme in terms of student satisfaction with our school.
  • For academic years 2021/22 and 2022/23 alternative surveys to PTES have been used by UCL, but the broadly similar satisfaction measures still maintain the highest scores for the MSc Entrepreneurship programme.
  • The frameworks show both the specific way we manage MSc Entrepreneurship and a generic version, which could be used and adapted to fit any other programme.

I would be very happy to discuss further and present more detail behind each framework criteria.
