‘You have to start with a seed!’: A case study of school food education at Ingalls Academy

Abstract

Food education in school is not prioritised. As interest in school food grows, we continue to see a push for better nutritional standards to support children’s wellbeing. Very little attention is given to food education curriculum and its function in shaping children’s eating behaviours and attitudes. School food policy is classed, gendered and racialised. This paper presents findings from a small scale case study carried out at Ingalls Academy, a primary school in England known for adopting a whole school food approach.

Biography

Gurpinder is a Reader in Education for Social Justice and Inclusion in the School of Education, University of Wolverhampton. Trained as a sociologist and ethnographer, he has a track record in conducting research on the school meals service with a focus on inequity in education.
