Transitions into and through education: exploring the experiences of LGBTQ+ students and teachers (Inaugural Professorial Lecture)

posted on 2023-02-13, 15:25 authored by Jonathan GlazzardJonathan Glazzard

In this lecture I explore aspects of inclusion and social justice in education. I examine the lived experiences of queer students during their transitions into, and through, higher education. I challenge the dominant narrative in existing research which positions queer students as victims. In addition, I discuss the experiences of queer teachers working in the school sector. I also address key professional dilemmas relating to mental health and wellbeing in education.

Professor Jonathan Glazzard’s research focuses on mental health, wellbeing and inclusion in education. He is a qualitative researcher and uses a broad range of approaches, including narrative methodology, visual/participatory methods and more traditional interviews and focus groups. Jonathan’s recent projects include exploration of head teacher resilience, teacher and child mental health and the experiences of teachers who identify as LGBTQ+. Jonathan is a co-convenor of the British Educational Research Association (BERA) Special Interest Group, Mental Health and Wellbeing in Education. He is also a member of the Excellence in International Transitions Research which is led by Professor Divya Jindal-Snape. Jonathan is deeply committed to research which advances social justice. He has published widely on aspects of inclusion and social justice for marginalised groups .
